Designed by Andrea Zittel and produced at A-Z West in Joshua Tree, California, A-Z West Works are functional objects that support High Desert Test Sites in its mission to provide experimental arts programming through residencies, workshops, publications, exhibitions and events, and stewardship.

Containers

A-Z Containers are handmade ceramic bowls that serve all eating and drinking functions. Zittel began using containers in daily life in the early 1990s and they continue to serve as the sole dinnerware used at A-Z West. Large bowls are perfect for main meals, medium bowls for cereals, sides, or tea, and small bowls are just right for a cocktail.

Clay bodies and glazes vary - while we have certain classics, we also like to experiment. Check back often as stock changes.

 

Covers

A-Z West Covers are hand-woven textiles made in the A-Z West weaving studio on one of the eight floor looms that we share with a growing community of local weavers. Zittel first started using covers in the early 1990s as versatile objects that, depending on need, could serve a multitude of functions from cloak to tablecloth to curtain.

Covers take time to weave! We list them as they come off the looms - the studio currently produces about twelve covers a year.

 

Corners

The A-Z West Corner is a simple furniture design that is made to support the body and/or other objects. Turned on one side it becomes a low bench with comfortable back and side rest, turned on another side it functions as a high end table (or standing desk!) and turned on yet another side it becomes a low desk or coffee table.

Each corner has a single panel of color – in some instances it may be possible to request Corners in custom colors.

 

Panel Tops

A-Z West Panel Tops are made in our weaving studio out of the same fabric as our A-Z West Covers. The Panel Top evolved from a simple dictate that Zittel established for herself in the 1990s to only make and wear garments from rectangles.
While this resulted in many different designs, panel tops may be the most multi functional.

West Works support the general sustainability of A-Z West including access to collective resources for our local community and help generate income for artists local to the high desert, where employment and means of financial support are often limited.

West Works may also be purchased from the studio by prior arrangement.
